FDA_get_drug_label (Type: FDALabelTool)#

FDA_get_drug_label tool specification

Tool Information:

  • Name: FDA_get_drug_label

  • Type: FDALabelTool

  • Description: Get the complete FDA-approved prescribing information for a specific drug by name. Pass ‘route’ whenever the product’s form is known (eye drops -> OPHTHALMIC, cream or ointment -> TOPICAL, IV injection -> INTRAVENOUS, IM injection -> INTRAMUSCULAR, rectal foam or suppository -> RECTAL, inhaler -> RESPIRATORY (INHALATION), patch -> TRANSDERMAL): one drug name covers products of several routes whose labels differ, and without ‘route’ the tool returns whichever products openFDA lists first (for example, ‘atropine sulfate’ without a route can return injections and Lomotil tablets but not the eye drops). Returns all clinical sections of the official drug label: indications, dosing regimens, contraindications, black box warnings, drug interactions, use in specific populations (pregnancy, pediatrics, renal/hepatic impairment), pharmacokinetics, mechanism of action, and adverse reactions. This is the authoritative source for FDA-approved drug clinical information in the US. Each section is returned up to max_section_chars characters (default 25000, which holds a full clinical section for essentially every label); if any section is longer it is cut and the response carries top-level ‘truncated’: true plus a ‘truncation_note’ naming the cut sections, so a shortened section is never presented as complete. Pass max_section_chars=0 for the whole label with no limit.

Parameters:

  • drug_name (string) (required) Brand or generic drug name (e.g., ‘warfarin’, ‘Eliquis’, ‘apixaban’, ‘atorvastatin’, ‘metformin’)

  • max_section_chars ([‘integer’, ‘null’]) (optional) Maximum characters returned per clinical section (default: 25000, 0 = no limit). Sections longer than this are cut and the response then carries top-level ‘truncated’: true plus ‘truncation_note’ naming the affected sections. Raise this value (or pass 0) to retrieve those sections in full; a complete label is roughly 50-110 KB of text.

  • route ([‘string’, ‘null’]) (optional) Optional route of administration of the product whose label you want, as openFDA names it (case-insensitive), for example ORAL, TOPICAL, OPHTHALMIC, INTRAVENOUS, INTRAMUSCULAR, SUBCUTANEOUS, RECTAL, NASAL, TRANSDERMAL, VAGINAL, SUBLINGUAL, RESPIRATORY (INHALATION) or AURICULAR (OTIC). One name often covers products of several routes (atropine: injection, eye drops, and combination tablets); without a route the tool returns whichever labels openFDA lists first. A label whose openFDA block names no route is matched when its description or carton text names the route. An unknown route is rejected with the full list.

Example Usage:

query = {
    "name": "FDA_get_drug_label",
    "arguments": {
        "drug_name": "example_value"
    }
}
result = tu.run(query)

FDA_list_drug_classes tool specification

Tool Information:

  • Name: FDA_list_drug_classes

  • Type: FDALabelTool

  • Description: List FDA Established Pharmacologic Classes and label counts. The ranked class catalog is recoverably paginated: start with offset=0 and continue with metadata.next_offset while metadata.has_more is true. openFDA exposes at most 1000 class values; metadata.total_is_exact marks whether that cap was reached.

Parameters:

  • limit (integer) (optional) Maximum number of drug classes to return (default: 20, max: 100)

  • offset (integer) (optional) Zero-based ranked-class offset. Continue with metadata.next_offset.

Example Usage:

query = {
    "name": "FDA_list_drug_classes",
    "arguments": {
    }
}
result = tu.run(query)

FDA_search_drug_labels (Type: FDALabelTool)#

Search FDA-approved drug labels (prescribing information) by drug name or medical indication. Pas…

FDA_search_drug_labels tool specification

Tool Information:

  • Name: FDA_search_drug_labels

  • Type: FDALabelTool

  • Description: Search FDA-approved drug labels (prescribing information) by drug name or medical indication. Drug labels contain official clinical guidance: indications, dosing regimens, contraindications, black box warnings, drug interactions, and adverse reactions. Use drug_name for drug-specific lookups (e.g., ‘metformin’, ‘warfarin’) or indication for condition-based searches (e.g., ‘hypertension’, ‘type 2 diabetes’). Returns a list of matching drug labels with key clinical sections. Results are paginated: start with offset=0 and continue with metadata.next_offset while metadata.has_more is true; metadata.total reports all matching labels. This is a compact multi-record summary view: each clinical section is limited to max_section_chars (default 2000) so a 20-record search stays small. Whenever a section is shortened the response carries top-level ‘truncated’: true and a ‘truncation_note’ naming the affected sections; raise max_section_chars, or use FDA_get_drug_label for the full text of one drug.

Parameters:

  • drug_name ([‘string’, ‘null’]) (optional) Brand or generic drug name to search (e.g., ‘metformin’, ‘atorvastatin’, ‘lisinopril’). Mutually exclusive with indication.

  • indication ([‘string’, ‘null’]) (optional) Medical condition to search in indications sections (e.g., ‘hypertension’, ‘type 2 diabetes’, ‘atrial fibrillation’). Mutually exclusive with drug_name.

  • limit (integer) (optional) Maximum number of results to return (default: 5, max: 20)

  • max_section_chars ([‘integer’, ‘null’]) (optional) Maximum characters returned per clinical section (default: 2000, 0 = no limit). Sections longer than this are cut and the response then carries top-level ‘truncated’: true plus ‘truncation_note’ naming the affected sections. Raise this value to retrieve longer sections; note that a 20-result search at a high limit returns a very large response.

  • offset (integer) (optional) Zero-based label offset. Continue with metadata.next_offset while metadata.has_more is true.

Example Usage:

query = {
    "name": "FDA_search_drug_labels",
    "arguments": {
    }
}
result = tu.run(query)
